Gandhi Jayanti, the birthday of Mohatma Gandhi is a national holiday in India observed on 2 October. Mohandas Karamchad Gandhi was the leader in Indian Independence movement. He employed non violent civil disobedience and led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity. Gandhi has inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The 2 October is celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.
The holiday is marked by prayer services and tributes at Raj Ghat, Gandhi's memorial in New Delhi. The President and the Prime Minister of India pay their respects at his memorial. Representatives from different religions take part in the prayer meeting held at Raj Ghat, where Gangdhi was cremated. Gandhi's favourite song, Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram, is usually sung in his memory.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated in all government and non-government organizations. Popular activities include prayer meetings and commemorative ceremonies. Painting and essay competitions are conducted in schools on themes of peace and non-violence.
Gandhi Jayanti is one of the three national holidays in India. The other two are the Republic Day (26 January) and Independence Day (15 August).
