Betla was one of the first national parks in India to become a tiger reserve under Project Tiger. The park is situated over the area of 1316 sq.km (508 sq.mi) and contains Palamau Tiger Reserve and Mahuadar wolf sanctuary. Park is home to a large variety of diverse eco-systems, wild animals and birds including elephants, sloth bear, panther, brown bear, wolf, jackal, hyena, gaur, rhesus monkey, four horned antelopes, nilgai, kakar, porcupine, mongoose hornbill, peafowl, red jungle fowl, black ibis, wagtails, etc.
