Palamau Tiger Reserve is one of the nine original tiger reserves in India and the only one in the state of Jharkhand. The reserve forms part of Betla National Park. The park was established in 1947 and comprises the territory of 1014 sq.km (392 sq.mi). Forest of the Palamu Tiger Reserve is divided into three zones, Buffer zone, Core zone and Tourism zone. Apart from tiger and elephant, leopard, gaur, sambar deer and wild dogs live in the reserve. It is home to over 140 species of birds including peafowl.
