Sivasagar, literally translating "the Ocean of Lord Shiva”, is a multi-cultural city in Upper Assam. Sivasagar formerly known as Rangpur, served as the capital of the Ahom Kingdom. The town is a heritage place famous for its Ahom palaces and monuments. The Rang Ghar is said to be amongst the largest of amphitheatres in Asia. The city is an important centre for the tea and oil industries.
