Formerly known as Vatapi, Badami was the regal capital of Badami Chalukyas from the 6th to 8th century. Located on the banks of Agastya Lake and surrounded by red sand stone cliffs, it is known for rock-cut cave temples. Landmarks in Badami include gateways, forts, sculptures and 18 inscriptions dating back to the 6-12th century. Badami is also a popular destination for free sport climbing and bouldering.
