Also known as the Land of High Passes, it is a high altitude region between the Kunlun mountain range and the Great Himalayas, next to Tibetan border. The altitude varies from 2750 m (9000ft) to 7672 m (25170 ft). There are several glaciers surrounding the place. Ladakh is known for its remote mountain beauty and its culture. It is home to more than 200 species of birds and rare animals, like snow leopard, black-necked crane, Asiatic Ibex, blue sheep etc. Majority of the people here are Tibetan Buddhist. The biggest cities in Ladakh are Leh and Kargil. Other places of interest are: Nubra, Zanskar, Drass.
