Kalimpong is a hill station located at an average altitude of 1250 m (4101 ft). The town is a religious centre of Buddhism. Zang Dhok Palri Phodand, the Buddhist monastery, holds a number of rare Tibetan Buddhist scriptures. Kalimpong is home to ethnic Nepalese. The town is known for its flower export industry and a wide array of orchids and gladioli. It is also a major ginger growing area in India.
