Vaishali is an archaeological site. Around the 6th century BCE, Vaishali was the capital city of the republican Licchavi state where Lord Mahavira was born. It is believed to be the world's first republic to have a duly elected assembly of representatives and efficient administration. Vaishali is an important place in Jain and Buddhist religions as the Second Buddhist council was convened here in the 4th century BCE and Gautama Buddha preached his last sermon before his death in the 5th century BCE. Vaishali is home to one of the best-preserved Pillars of Ashoka.
