It is a small and compact National park, covering an area of 448 sq.km (173 sq.mi) situated in the hills of the Vindhya Mountain range. Bandhavgarh has one of the highest densities of Bengal tigers in the world. The park contains about 40 species of mammals, more than 250 species of birds, about 80 species of butterflies and a number of reptiles. The park is dominated by the 14th century Bandhavgarh Fort with numerous caves containing shrines and ancient Sanskrit inscriptions.
