Kushinagar is a small town situated on the banks of the river Hiranyavati. It is an important Buddhist pilgrimage centre. Kushinagar was the capital of Malla dynasty. It is a holy place where Gautama Buddha attained Parinirvana after his death.
Major tourist sites in and around Kushinagar: Nirvana Stupa, Mahaparinirvana Temple, Watthai Temple, Mathakuar Shrine, Ramabhar Stupa, Chinese Temple, Japanese Temple, Government Buddha Museum, etc. Majority of stupas and viharas of Kushinagar are dated from 230 BC to 413 AD.
