Alappuzha is a town, formerly known as Alleppy, famous for its canals, backwaters, rivers, beaches and lagoons. It is often called The Venice of the East. Alappuzha is famous for the Nehru Trophy Boat race where huge low boats are rowed competitively by up to 100 people. It is held every August and is one of the most competitive and popular boat races in India.
Major tourist sites in and around Alappuzha: Mullackal Raja Rajeshwari and Mannarasala temples, Salafi Juma Masjid Mosque, R-Block, Alappuzha Beach, Krishnapuram Palace, Pathiramanal Island, Lighthouse etc.
