Kumarakom is a tourist village popular for its backwater boathouse rides. It is settled on man-made land reclaimed from Vembanad Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the state. Kumarakom is known for its vast lagoons, bird sanctuaries and holiday houses. The town is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a noted bird sanctuary where many species of migratory birds visit. Arundhati's novel The God of Small Things is set in Ayemenem or Aymanam Village, which adjoins Kumarakom.
