The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Sasan Gir, is the only home of Asiatic lions outside Africa. The park was established in 1965, with a total area of about 1412 sq. km (545 sq.mi) which encompaces the National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. It is located 43 km (26 mi) from Somnath and 65 km (41 mi) from Junagadh. The fauna species of Gir includes about 38 species of mammals, around 300 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles and more than 2,000 species of insects. The commonly found animals include chital, nilgai (or bluebull), sambar, four-horned antelope, chinkara, wild boar, etc. Some of the typical bird species found at Gir include crested serpent eagle, endangered Bonelli's eagle, crested hawk-eagle, brown fish owl, Indian eagle-owl, Indian pitta, etc. Jeep safaris are organized at the park.
