Colva is a coastal village in South Goa situated 40 km (25 mi) from the state’s capital Panaji. Colva’s beach stretches for about 2.5 km (1.5 mi) and is a part of 25 km (15.5 mi) sandy broad beach extending from Bogmalo to Cabo de Rama. The village was a popular destination for Portuguese. Today it has many ruins of mansions, villas from colonial era and white churches on the inland roads. The Church of Our Lady Of Mercy was founded in 1630 (rebuilt in the 18th century) and is famous for its miracle statue of Menino Jesus. The infrastructure is expanding and the village has modern amenities like air-conditioned resort complexes, tourist cottages, eateries, guest houses, etc. At the end of Colva Beach starts Benaulim, known for its calm and peaceful environment and offering more accommodation for backpackers.
When to visit: best time to visit October to March. March to May is hot and humid. June to September is monsoon season.
HOW TO REACH
Nearest railway station: Madgaon Junction railway station in Margo is about 7 km (4.3 mi) away. Margao station is the terminus station for several Konkan Railway trains and almost all trains passing through Goa stop here. There are direct trains from most parts of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Cochin, Mangalore, Bangalore, Gujarat, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
