Margao is a city in South Goa, situated on the banks of the riverl Sal. The town is located 33 km (21 mi) from the state’s capital Panaji and 6 km (3 mi) away from Colva Beach. Margao is one of the oldest towns in Goa known for a bustling market, number of shopping opportunities, churches, temples and Portuguese-era colonial architecture. Margao serves as the transport hub to the areas of South Goa and is a gateway for visiting Chandor, Quepem or Dudhsagar Falls.

When to visit: best time to visit October to March. March to May is hot and humid. June to September is monsoon season.

HOW TO REACH

Nearest railway station: Madgaon Junction railway station is about 4 km (2.4 mi) away. Margao station is the terminus station for several Konkan Railway trains and almost all trains passing through Goa stop here. There are direct trains from most parts of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Cochin, Mangalore, Bangalore, Gujarat, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Buses: The Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) is the state government’s bus service. Buses to/from Palolem, Colva, Benaulim and Betul use the Margao Bus Terminal or KTC bus stand. For longer distances you need to change buses. Biggest bus stations in Goa are – Mapusa, Panjim, Vasco da Gama, Margao and Canacona.
