Buses

Every region or state has its own bus network system which runs intercity or long distance buses. Busses between large cities run in short intervals. Buses are sometimes the only way to reach some of the country's more isolated areas and it is one of the cheapest and popular transport mode for travelling across states. Bus services are mostly run by state government owned transport corporations. There are also private companies serving the same destinations.

Bus stations usually have a ticket information desk, posted time tables, bus masters or attendants, bathroom, snack shops or vendors. Time table could be checked by phone too. Large terminal stations can be busy and hectic as they have many platforms for incoming and outgoing buses. Small villages or towns not necessarily have a bus stand or any sign for bus stop. However, local people know where the buses stop and wait on the side of the road.

The name of the destination is usually indicated on the front of the bus. Though sometimes it can be Hindi or other regional language. The buses rarely have toilets. The bus drivers usually make 5-10 min bathroom stops. Luggage are stored in compartments underneath or behind the bus or carried on the roof.

There four types of buses: ordinary, fast, deluxe (VIP or Luxury buses), sleeper bus.

Ordinary buses is the cheapest way to travel across states. The buses do not need to be reserved in advance. However, these buses are usually overcrowded, the seats are not reserved and there are people standing in the isle. The buses are slower as they make many stops in between the destinations.

Deluxe (VIP or Luxury) Bus Service might have up to 50% higher rates than ordinary buses. The buses are air conditioned, have assured seating and have limited stops. The buses are more comfortable, with lockable luggage space at the back of the bus, TV and video player. Some privately owned corporations offer VOLVO Bus Service. However, luxury buses are priced more than the deluxe buses, do not run the extensive destination network as ordinary buses an may not be available from bus stands.

Fast buses usually have a sign printed on the window or on side of the bus. The fast buses are not always the safeties option to travel as the drivers tend to over speed on the road.

Overnight sleeper buses are run by private companies and usually have stops outside the company’s offices or some other location. These are direct buses and generally run with one bathroom or meal stop. A sleeper bus is a large bus with cabins above the seats that can fit two or more people. Cabins are with a window view on one side and isle on the other. Cabins are separated with isle curtains. Blankets and pillows are not provided.

Buses run by the state government are usually the more reliable option. In the case of the breakdown, another bus will be sent to pick up passengers.
