Luxury Trains

In 1982 Indian Railways together with Rajasthan Tourism Department introduced the first luxury tourist train in India Palace on Wheels. The train was launched to promote tourism in Rajasthan. The project was a great success among overseas travelers and a few decades later more luxury trains were introduced to the travelers. At present there are 5 trains offering sightseeing journeys across major tourist destinations in India. The tours include accommodation, dining, sightseeing, transportation and porter charges.

Palace on Wheels is the first luxurious train in India launched by the Indian Railways in 1982. The train offers week-long tours of Rajasthan, departing from Delhi. The tour covers Jaipur, Ranthambore, Chittaurgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur and Agra and includes sightseeing of forts, palaces, with wildlife, cultural and heritage interactions. There are 14 coaches with four cabins in each matching the interiors of royal past and equipped with modern amenities such as internet, television, individual climate control, attached bathrooms, etc. There are two restaurants, a bar and sitting lounge, SPA. Maharajas' Express is owned and operated by Indian Railways and is the most expensive luxury train in the world. Maharajas’ Express has been internationally acclaimed for its accommodation, dining facilities, services, and off-train excursion programs. The train runs on 5 circuits across West and North Central India, mainly Rajasthan. The train operates between the months of October and April. The Maharajas' Express train has been equipped with modern amenities, such as pneumatic suspension, live television, Wi-Fi, attached bathrooms, dining cars, bar, lounge and souvenir shop. Larger cabins have roll-top baths and spacious sitting rooms. The train comprises 23 carriages and accommodation is available in 14 guest carriages categorized in deluxe, junior suites, suites and presidential cabins. Deccan Odyssey is a 5-star hotel on wheels offering train tour itineraries through Maharashtra and Goa states. The route starts in Mumbai and continues to Arangaubad, Tadoba, Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Nashik, Goa, Kolhapur (destinations depend on tour itinerary), etc. The train consists of 10 air-conditioned Deluxe Cabin saloons, each with combination of 4 twin bedded chambers and 2 fully air-conditioned Presidential Suite saloons, equipped with channel music, intercom, attached toilets, shower and other amenities. The Golden Chariot is a luxury tourist train offering two tour itineraries in South India (Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry). The train is named after the temple at Hampi and consists of 19 purple and gold colored coaches with a logo of a mythological animal with the head of an elephant and a body of a lion. The trips run from October to March. There are 44 cabins, 2 restaurants, a lounge bar, conference, gym and spa facilities. Royal Rajasthan on Wheels is a luxury tourist train, modeled after Palace on Wheels and run by Indian Railways since 2009. The trains consist of 14 cabins, named after palaces of Rajasthan (Hawa Mahal or Palace of Winds, Padmini Mahal, etc.). They are categorized into Deluxe and Super Deluxe types and are equipped with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, direct dial phones, individual temperature control, satellite, etc. There are 2 dining cars and Spa. Royal Rajasthan on Wheels offer an 8 days and 7 nights trips including tours in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur Chittorgarh, Khajuraho, Varanasi, Agra and Delhi. Attractions include the Taj Mahal, Amber Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Mehrangarh Fort, Ranthambore National Park and Group of Temples at Khajuraho.
