Kempegowda International Airport (IATA: BLR) in Bengaluru is the third busiest airport in India in terms of overall passengers.
The airport is located 40 kilometers (25 mi) from the central business district of Bangalore and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) from the Bangalore City Railway Station. It takes one to two hours to reach the Airport from the city center depending on the traffic situation.
The passenger’s terminal was built in 2008. It is a single, four-level building accommodating international and domestic operations. The terminals share the same check-in hall which is located on level 1 (ground floor) together with baggage reclaim. The domestic and international departure lounges and the majority of the retail outlets are on level 2 (first floor). The arrival and departure areas are separated vertically with a modern, simple, straight-ahead flow system.
The airport has 38 gates, 20 aero-bridges and 18 remote bus bays. As well as a range of retail outlets, Duty-free store, the airport has dedicated departure lounges. VIP Lounge is located on Level 1 of the terminal. Plaza Premium Lounge located after the security check-in is open to all travelers regardless of the class of travel. The Above Ground Level Lounges at the domestic and international terminals are accessible to all classes of travelers. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal building. Users have to provide mobile numbers as the passwords are sent by text message. Money exchange and ATM’s are also available. Bangalore airport has a new transit hotel, opened in September 2014.
The Airport is operated by Vayu Vajra Shuttle services that connect the city and the Airport through 9 routes. The service is operated by air-conditioned Green Volvo buses at a frequency of 30 minutes. The busses run 24x7 (24 hours day, 7 days a week) and are available for both arrival and departure passengers. The schedules and routes of the busses are displayed at the Arrival Hall of the passenger Terminal Building. Buss tickets are to be purchased inside the bus.
Taxis and prepaid-taxi booths are available in front of the terminal building and in the designated area.
Auto rickshaws are not allowed inside the Airport territory. Passengers can get dropped off at the trumpet interchange by an auto rickshaw and then use an airport shuttle bus from the interchange to reach the terminal.
