Chennai International Airport (IATA: MAA) in Chennai is the third busiest airport in India in terms of international traffic. It is the main hub for arrivals and departures in south India. The airport is situated in the suburban area of Tirusulam near Pallavarm about 15 kilometers (10 mi) south of the city. It takes around 45 minutes to reach the city center, depending on the traffic.
Airport consists of two terminals: domestic and international. Both terminals are in the same premises but are not linked. The access between two terminal buildings are by free battery operated golf carts, coach services or walking.
The new domestic terminal MGR was opened in April, 2013. The International Terminal was commissioned in mid 2013. The new International Terminal is still under development and the amenities are limited.
The airport could be reached by Suburban trains. The nearest station is Tirusulam Railway Station. Trains run from Tirusulam Station to Egmore Station in Chennai every 20 to 40 minutes. The journey time is around 30 minutes (the trains do not operate during night time).
There is a bus stop outside the airport gate, which is a relatively long walk from the terminals. Bus 18A departs frequently for central Chennai. The journey takes around 45 minutes.
Prepaid taxis are available outside the airport with moderate fares fixed by the government. Taxis can be booked from a counter in the arrivals area of the terminal buildings.
Chennai metro started its operation on 29 June 2015. Metro line to Airport is planned to be launched some time in 2015. Chennai Airport will be the third airport after Delhi and Kolkata connected by a Metro Rail. The concourse of the station will be linked to the passenger terminals by means of a connector tube connecting the metro station to the flyover at the terminals. With the construction of the metro rail station, the Tirusulam suburban train station will be integrated with the metro and the airport.
