Kodaikanal is a hill station situated in the upper Palani Hills at the altitude of 2133 metres (6998 ft). Kodaikanal is often referred to as the Princess of Hill Stations. It is well known for the Kurinji flower which blooms once in 12 years in December and colours the valley blue (the next bloom is in 2018). Founded by American and European Missionaries, it is a popular tourist and retreat destination. There are many churches, Hindu temples, Muslim mosques and an active community of Tibetan Buddhist refugees.
