Also known as Mahabalipuram, it is an ancient historic town situated on the shore of the Bay of Bengal, 60 km (37 mi) from Chennai. The group of monuments at Mamallapuram is included in UNESCO World Heritage list. It is famous for stone carvings dating back to 7-9th century. These carvings are some of the oldest existing examples of Dravidian architecture. The group of sanctuaries includes rathas (chariots), mandapas (cave sanctuaries) and open air reliefs.
Mahabs Beach has been gaining prominance among the surfing community for tha fabulous waves from January to March.
Major tourist sites in and around Mamallapuram include: Shore Temple, Arjuna’s Penance, Krishna’s Butterball, Panch Pandava Rathas, Ottawadai Street, India Seashell Museum, etc.
