Rameswaram is a holy town and a pilgrimage centre, situated on the Pamban Island in the Gulf of Mannar and connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge. Rameswaram is a place of one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines or the 12 temples enshrining Shiva. There are sixty-four Tirthas or Theerthams (holy water bodies) in and around the town, several beaches, rich marine biosphere, etc.
