Kumbakonam is an ancient holy town located between Rivers Kaveri and Arasalar. It is famous for the Mahamagham festival which takes place once every 12 years. Kumbakonam is known for its temples and mathas  (monasteries), brass wares and silk. There are about 188 temples in and around the city. Kumbakonam served as a capital of the Medieval Cholas. Major tourist sites in and around the city: Kumbheswara Temple, Nageshwara Temple, Ramaswami Temple, Sarangapani Temple, Mahamagham Tank, etc.
