Madurai is one of the oldest, continuously inhabited cities in the world. Madurai was among the nominees for the new list of 7 Wonders of the World for its architecture. It is located on the banks of the River Vaigai and is built around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which acted as the geographic and ritual centre. The city is often refered to as Thoonga Nagaram meaning ‘the city that never sleeps’.
