Thanjavur also known as Tanjore, is an important pilgrimage, South Indian art and architecture centre. Brihadeeswarar Temple, built in 11th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In and around the city there are many religious, historical and cultural monuments, including Saraboji Palace and Saraswathi Mahal Library. Thanjavur is famous for Tanjore paintings, art plates, handicrafts, pitch craft and South Indian musical instruments.
