Tirunelveli is a small ancient town, also known as Nellai. The Tamirabarani River divides the town into the Tirunelveli quarter and the Palayamkottai area. Tirunelveli was a capital of the Pandya Kingdom. The town is also known for halwa (a sweet made of highly refined wheat, sugar and ghee), popularly known as Tirunelveli Iruttukadai alva.
