Ellora, also known as Elapura, is an archaeological site. Ellora Caves are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. It preserves the mythological and religious heritage of India. Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cave temples dating back to the 5th to 11th century are located here. In total there are 34 caves, consisting of viharas (monasteries), with the carvings of Gautama Buddha, bodhisattvas and saints. Ellora Caves are close to Ajanta Caves. Ellora Caves could be a one-day trip from Aurangabad.
