Nanded is a historical city, situated on the banks of the Godavari River. It is one of the major pilgrimage destinations for Sikhs. The city has many Sufi shrines and gurudwaras (Sikh places of worship). Hazur Sahib Gurudwara is the second holiest place for Sikhs, after the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab. The city, and its surrounding areas, are also marked by monuments built in typical Dravidian style architecture built by the Chalukyas and the Rashtrakutas who ruled Nanded from the 4th century CE to the 11th century CE.
