Tawang is a town famous for Tawang Monastery which is said to be the biggest Buddhist monastery in the world outside of Lhasa, Tibe . The monastery is a major holy site for Tibetan Buddhists and the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama. The city is situated on elevation of 3048m (10000 ft) and is inhabited by Monpa tribe. Visitors to Tawang require special Inner Line permits.
