Shillong is the capital city of Meghalya and the former capital of Assam. The city is located in the Shillong plateau and is surrounded by hills. It is home to several waterfalls. Majority inhabitants belong to Khasi tribe which is matrilineal society. There are also many minority groups such as Assamese, Bengali, Nepali etc.
Major tourist sites in and around Shillong: Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, Lady Hyfari Park, Wards Lake, Capt. Williamson Sangma State Museum, Butterfly Museum, Bara Bazar- which is one of the biggest in North-East India. Shillong is also known for Shillong Chamber Choir and Shillong Golf Course.
