Guwahati is the former capital of Assam and the largest city in the state. It is a river port and a major commercial and educational hub of the state. It is an ancient city with many Hindu temples, bazaars and archaeological locations of mythological importance. The city is famous all over the world for Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, Assam tea, Assam silk and golden silk Muga. Peacock Island, with the 17th century Umananda temple, is considered to be the smallest human inhabited island in the world.
