Nalanda is the site of the ancient higher learning institution, also known as the Nalanda University. It was a Buddhist University established in the 5th century and destroyed in the beginning of the 12th century by invaders. Nalanda was one of the world‘s first residential Universities. Its ruins occupy an area of 14 hectares. It is known that the university attracted scholars and students from Tibet, China, Greece and Iran. Nalanda could be a one day trip from Rajgir, Gaya or Patna.
