Patna is the capital city of Bihar state. It is an ancient city and served as the capital of the Maurya and Gupta empires. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. Patna is situated on the southern bank of the Ganges River. It is a sacred place for Sikhs and a starting point for visiting the Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage centres: Vaishali, Rajgir, Nalanda, Bodgaya and Pawapuri.
