Maheshwar is a small holy town situated on the north bank of the Narmada River. It is an ancient, historical town mentioned in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Maheshwar is a temple town with as many as 100 temples dotting the city. The town is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is often referred to as the Varanasi of Central India.The town is also known for its distinctive hand woven Maheshwari sarees.
