Hampi, situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, was a former capital of the Vijayanagra Empire. It has many sites of historical and archaeological significance. The Group of Monuments at Hampi is listed as UNESCO World Heritage site. Hampi has various notable Hindu temples and monuments belonging to the old city. The city continues to be an important religious centre.
