Madikeri is a hill station and the headquarters of the Kodagu district also known as Coorg. The town is located at an altitude of 1170 m (3838 ft) in the Western Ghats. In the 17th century, it was the capital of the Kodagu King Madduraja. Madikeri is famous for its coffee and cardamom plantations. Dubare Forest Reserve, situated in a close distance to the city, is known for its elephant camp that offers unique opportunities for elephant rides.
