Udupi is a coastal city and a popular pilgrimage destination. It is the headquarters of the district and is also known as Rajata Peetha and Shivalli. The city is known for the Lord Krishna Temple, the sanctum of the great Sanskrit philosopher Madhwacharya, Paryaya Festival, wood carvings and Udupi cuisine. There are several beaches around Udupi.
